Frequently Asked Questions of the Victim/Witness Unit

Q. What do I do when I receive a subpoena?
A.
Call the Deputy/Assistant District Attorney who is listed in the subpoena so that they know you received it. Make the DDA/ADA aware of current phone number(s) where you can be reached, in case you are an on-call witness and your testimony has been pushed back. If you are not an on-call witness, clear your schedule for the entire day listed on the subpoena, you might be at the Courthouse for the whole day.

Q. How do I make sure I receive the restitution that is due to me?
A. Make sure you return your Victim Impact Statement that was sent to you within 30 days of receipt. Provide copies of any and all bills with the Victim Impact Statement so that the Court can be made aware of how much restitution is owed to you. If you receive other bills after you returned your Victim Impact Statement just forward copies of them to the Victim/Witness Unit and they will make sure they are made part of the file. Restitution will be ordered by a Judge at the time of Sentencing

Q. What does Crime Victim’s Compensation cover?
A. They are the payer of last resort if you have other insurance you must use that first. They can help with expenses related to but not limited to Medical bills, Counseling expenses, Loss of Earnings, Loss of Support, Relocation expenses, Funeral Expenses, Crime-scene Cleanup and Stolen Social Security Pension funds. They do not cover pain and suffering or loss of property. If you need more information their number is 1-800-233-2339. You may also contact the Victim/Witness Unit for a form.
